After a few years in the wilderness 20th Century Fox are finally showing some focus with their X-Men franchise. X-Men: First Class rejuvenated the brand, early buzz on The Wolverine is positive, and X-Men: Days of Future Past will be the biggest X-Men movie yet.
The franchise will continue (it makes too much money for it not too), and some details have leaked which may reveal what the studio is planning next.
According to X-MenFilms.com 20th Century Fox has registered the domain name X-ForceMovie.com. For those not familiar with the title, X-Force was a comic created by writer/illustrator Rob Liefeld in the early 90s. In the story the original X-Force team was formed by Cable, a half-cyborg mutant. While the other X-teams lead by Charles Xavier believed in protecting humans from evil mutants, X-Force adopted a “Get them before they get you” mentality. A new version of the X-Force team was formed in 2007 with Wolverine leading a more militant and aggressive branch of the X-Men.
An X-Force movie would be a cool route for 20th Century Fox to go down. It may not follow the comics entirely, but it may present opportunities to use characters such as Cable, Psylocke, Deadpool and Archangel. Whether Hugh Jackman wants to stick around as Wolverine beyond seven movies remains to be seen, but the franchise needs to move on from his version of Wolverine eventually.
Rob Liefeld seems to have known about these plans for a while, and confirmed to his Twitter followers that he was informed a movie was in development back in March. It’s still early days, but an X-Force movie could be hitting screens within the next few years.
