Writers talk Venom spin-off

venom spinoffOver the past few months we’ve been getting quite a lot of news about Spider-Man 4, including a release date. However something we haven’t heard much about is the Venom spin-off that first had rumblings around a year ago. Well now we have something, as SHH got the chance to talk to Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who Sony have hired to write the script:

“Venom is something that we’re very fired up to be writing,” Reese told us. “We have turned in a draft and are waiting to hear back, so it’s early in the process. But it’s a thrill to be writing ‘Venom’ for obvious reasons.” As far as what Marvel is looking for, Reese did say that they had to follow “certain parameters” or the “47 rules” as Wernick called them.

“Obviously, with a character like Venom there’s a ton of stuff to draw from,” Reese told us. “Then they had specific rules about the villain and the backstory and stuff like that, so there were certain things they wanted us… certain parameters they gave us. But largely we pitched them something and they liked it but they had changes, so we worked on the outline for a long time and then we wrote the script. So with Marvel and Sony and us it’s definitely very, very collaborative.”

They couldn’t talk about whether they were going to ignore everything that happened with the character in Spider-Man 3 or start fresh for reasons mentioned above.

This is what made me so PO'ed about Spidey 3. Venom is such an awesome character and they killed him off just as quickly as they introduced him.

They really messed up with the casting in all the spider man movies!!!!!! The original Venom; Eddie Brock was a big jock football player ahole dude, they ended up using the guy from the 70s show!!! r u kiddin me wtf!!!! I didnt like any of the spider man movies, if they do this movie they'd better smarten up n choose the right people for the roles. For gods sake just pay attention to the comics man!!!!! I dont mean to sound like a hater, its just Im a huge fan of the comics, and when marvel doesn't do the comics justice I get annoyed.

The things wrong with Spiderman 3 (and some of which were also wrong with 1-2 as well). First, Toby Maguire was cast as (for some ungodly reason) Spidey (which in the third film appears to be some faggy emo douch bag. Granted he is possesed by the Venom symbiote, but why does it make him emo? It turns Eddie Brock into a badass. If he learned to harness the power he would be the greatest superhero of all time. Seeing as how venom is WAY MORE POWERFUL than Spiderman.) Umm, fail. Second, Kirsten Dunst was cast as Mary Jane… Really… Two strikes with your first two main characters? Come on Marvel. You can do better than that right? Oh wait… Third, there were three villains. One of which being the greatest villain of all time, Venom. Who got a whopping 7 minutes of actual screentime. (10 if you count the the scenes referring to him.) The other, less interesting villains stole the spotlight, for reasons yet to be known by the legally sane public. Not to say the other villains are not great. Don’t get me wrong Sandman and Green Gobblin are very good villains, but… come on. It’s freakin Venom! Which brings me to my next point. Who the hell in their right mind would cast Topher ‘fuckin’ Grace as Eddie Brock? I mean really Stan? Were you drunk when you allowed this to happen? Maybe high. Were you high? Venom is an amazing villain. Topher is a great actor. He really is, but he is NOT Venom, and they should not be put together. Peanut butter is amazing. So is Ranch dressing. I have never tried this so I’m not sure, but I’m just taking a shot in the dark I guess, that these two would not go good together. As far as the other villains go they are great. Just not in the same movie as Venom. And finally the Venom movie… Great idea! Do it! But only if you don’t cast Topher as Venom. Please God do not put us through that again.
