According to Deadline William Monahan, the Oscar winning writer behind Kingdom of Heaven, The Departed and Edge of Darkness, has been hired to write the script for Oblivion.
Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski teamed up with Radical Publishing last year to produce the graphic novel, which is set on a future Earth where civilization lives above the clouds and scavengers collect ancient artifacts from the polluted surface below. When one young scavenger finds a crashed spacecraft it leads him on a journey filled with romance and adventure.
Last month Kosinski shopped the movie, which he intends to direct, to studios such as Paramount and Universal, however Disney had an exclusive negotiating window and they used it to snap up the project. The director is currently finishing up Tron Legacy for Disney so the ball may start rolling once the script is complete, although the studio may want Kosinski to jump straight into the Tron sequel which already has writers working away on the screenplay.
The graphic novel won’t be released until November 16th, however you can read the first chapter here.
