Ty Burrell will star in The Muppets sequel

Ty Burrell will be joining the Muppets in their upcoming sequel to the 2011 film. The movie will be set in Europe and Burrell will play an Interpol agent, one of a few human roles introduced for the sequel, as Jason Segal will not be returning. Christoph Waltz was originally in consideration for the role, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

Burrell is best known for his Emmy winning portrayal of the hapless Phil Dunphy on the hit ABC sitcom Modern Family. Burrell is also known for playing roles that he himself describes as “jerks,” including a rich scumbag in Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.

So far no real details on the plot have been revealed, other than the European setting, but there are a few things we do know. The film has a planned release date for December 20th 2013, and will begin filming early next year. We also know that the actual Muppets will play a more prominent role in this film than the 2011 film but, in line with usual Muppet tradition, expect a lot of celebrity cameos.
