Lionsgate has set a release date of March 23, 2012 for Gary Ross’ feature adaptation of The Hunger Games. Set in post-apocalyptic America, Hunger Games introduces 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen, who must participate in a fight-to-the-death annual event called the Hunger Games. The battles are televised, and pit youths from each of the Capitol’s 12 Districts against each other.
Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) came aboard to direct last September and author of the book, Suzanne Collins, wrote the script herself which is now being revised by Billy Ray (State of Play, Flightplan).
Lionsgate are hoping for this to become their Twilight and there are another two books waiting to be adapted (Catching Fire and Mockingjay) should The Hunger Games be a hit. No roles have been cast so far, but it is only a matter of time as shooting is expected to begin later this year, either towards the end of spring or beginning of summer.
