The Hobbit Extended Editions confirmed

Cate Blanchett and Ian McKellen in The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey Image Extending The Hobbit into a trilogy raised questions by some who wondered how’d they’d get so much material from one 300+ page book. Now it has been confirmed that, along with the theatrical versions, we will also be getting Extended Editions of The Hobbit films on DVD and Blu-ray.

Digital Bits got details on Warner Bros’. 90th Anniversary home media slate, which also includes Cloud Atlas and The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition.

And finally, among the new films you can expect on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013 are The Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas and – officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition (Q4). One suspects a theatrical cut will be released earlier in 2013, following the home video release pattern of the previous Lord of the Rings films. And it’s reasonable to suspect that a Blu-ray 3D version will be forthcoming as well.

Peter Jackson previously stated that he’d like to make The Hobbit Extended Editions, and they “would look very similar to the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions”. Any Tolkien fans looking forward to a 2 day Middle Earth marathon in 2015?

For those wondering, The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition will be released towards the end of 2013 and will include all three films plus exclusive collectables and nearly an hour of all new material.
