Joss Whedon has revealed to Digital Spy that the sequel to 2012’s superhero blockbuster The Avengers will be an opportunity to focus on character relationships. The film’s writer/director also confirmed that he has been given much more freedom for the sequel, in terms of story and character development.
The Avengers saw Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Captain America team up to combat an alien invasion. The film enjoyed monumental success and grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide making it the biggest movie of 2012.

“I have a greater opportunity to dig into the relationships in the second one,” he explained, “and that’s what’s really exciting about it for me.”
The Avengers 2 is scheduled for release on 1st May 2015 but next up is Iron Man 3, which kicks off Marvel/Disney’s Phase Two series and sees Robert Downey Jr return as the titular hero.
