Disney has released the first trailer for The Muppets sequel, Muppets Most Wanted. Jason Segel, who co-wrote the first movie and was instrumental in getting The Muppets back on the big-screen is not returning for the follow-up (neither is Amy Adams). Instead it appears that Modern Family‘s Ty Burrell has secured the lead role. Well, lead human role anyway; not counting Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, etc. The other humans you can expect to see hanging out with The Muppets include Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, Christoph Waltz, Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs, Ray Liotta, and Tom Hiddleston.
While this is only a small glimpse at the film, unfortunately the trailer is somewhat underwhelming as it appears though the tone of the sequel is more childish, opposed to the clever and irreverent nature of the first installment. But this is only about a minute of footage so it’s too early to tell. The reason The Muppets went away in the first place was due to the diminishing quality of their sequels (Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets in Space), so let’s hope that the sequel of this reboot doesn’t follow suit.

Disney’s Muppets Most Wanted takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.
James Bobin/Nicholas Stoller have taken on directing/screenwriting duties (respectively) once again. Muppets Most Wanted will be released on March 21st, 2014.
