Rango won Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars this past weekend, and Paramount intends to stay in the animation business with a SpongeBob SquarePants movie planned for a late-2014 release.
At a conference today CEO Philippe Dauman said (via THR):
We will be releasing a SpongeBob movie at the end of 2014, which will serve to start off or be one of our films that starts off our new animation effort.
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released back in 2004 and was a critical and financial success, making $140 million worldwide on a budget of $30 million. The movie was originally going to be the finale for the show, but it’s success convinced creator Stephen Hillenburg to make more episodes. Philippe Dauman didn’t reveal any further details about the movie, other than it would have a similar budget and wouldn’t cost more than $100 million to produce.
SpongeBob SquarePants has been running since 1999 and 204 episodes have been made so far.
