Seth Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg, who brought us raunchy live-action films such as Superbad, Pineapple Express, and This Is The End, are bringing their R-rated sensibilities to the world of animation. The film, entitled Sausage Party, is being described as:
A raunchy animated movie about one sausage’s quest to discover the truth about his existence. After falling out of a shopping cart, our hero sausage and his new friends embark on a perilous journey through the supermarket to get back to their aisles before the 4th of July sale.
This is the kind of risky project a studio allows a filmmaker to make after delivering hit movie after hit movie, especially since their off-kilter apocalyptic horror comedy This Is The End just surpassed the $100 million mark domestically. R-rated cartoons haven’t been known to be such easy sells at the box-office and they aren’t cheap to produce either. The highest grossing one ever is South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut which took in $52 million in 1999 (which would be about $83 million with inflation). Of course, that film was based on an immensely popular television show while Sausage Party is an original property. But with Rogen and Goldberg’s pedigree, this should certainly be intriguing.
Sony Pictures is releasing the film which will be directed by Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens, Madagascar 3) and Greg Thiernan (Thomas the Tank Engine). Jonah Hill also helped come up with the story. Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio, had this to say:
We’re thrilled to be back in business with Seth and Evan. This project has all the irreverent, insightful and risqué R-rated humor we have come to expect from them. Matching their unique comic sensibility with an animated film is a fun and inspired idea. We are confident Seth, Evan, Conrad and Greg will deliver one of the most memorable animated movies of all time.
Sausage Party is eying a 2015 release date.
