Sci-Fi Movies 2014: Mutants, Apes and Wormholes

New and upcoming science fiction movies continue to grab the attention of audiences around the world, a recent example being Gravity which is one of the highest grossing movies of last year. In 2014 sci-fi movies are quite diverse, ranging from time-travelling mutants, a future overrun by apes, and Johnny Depp’s mind being downloading onto a supercomputer, among many others. In this post we will highlight some of (what we hope will be) the best upcoming sci-fi movies of 2014.

Sci-Fi Movies 2014

sci-fi-movies-2014 2014 will kick off with a reboot of a sci-fi classic. In the film, set in 2028, Joel Kinnaman plays Alex Murphy, a crime-fighting police detective with a wife (Abbie Cornish) and son (John Paul Ruttan). Murphy is caught in an explosion and robot technology company OmniCorp see an opportunity to turn him into a half-human half-robot police officer. They hope to make billions by deploying a RoboCop in each city, however Alex Murphy is still conscious and is seeking justice.

Gary Oldman plays scientist Dr. Dennett Norton who is responsible for creating RoboCop and Michael Keaton takes a villainous turn as the CEO of OmniCorp. Audience seems to like men in cool hi-tech suits (Iron Man) so MGM and director José Padilha will be hoping to rejuvenate the RoboCop franchise and potentially spawn a new series of films.

Following the success of The Hunger Games Lionsgate has adapted another young adult novel with a similar demographic called Divergent. The film is set in a futuristic Chicago where people are divided into five distinct factions based on their personalities. Beatrice (played by Shailene Woodley) discovers that she is Divergent, meaning she does not fit into any one faction, and soon uncovers a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

Limitless director Neil Burger has managed to surround Woodley with a fine cast, including Maggie Q, Zoë Kravitz and Jai Courtney. The most interesting casting choice is Kate Winslet who makes a rare appearance in this 2014 sci-fi movie as the main villain of the piece. Buzz has been so-so for Divergent so we’ll have to wait and see whether this spawns another franchise opportunity for Lionsgate.

Transcendence is a sci-fi thriller from director Wally Pfister, who has worked as Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer for many years and has decided to direct his first big budget movie. The story follows Johnny Depp as Doctor Will Caster, an artificial intelligence researcher who wants to build a sentient machine capable of collective intelligence. When a radical anti-technology group kill Caster, his wife (played by Rebecca Hall) uploads his brain into the prototype supercomputer, and that’s when things get strange. As well as Johnny Depp and Rebecca Hall, Transcendence also stars Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Kate Mara and Cillian Murphy among others.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Many comic book movies can be classed as sci-fi movies, but in 2014 X-Men: Days of Future Past may be the most sci-fi of them all. Giant robots? Check. Wolverine having his mind transported back to the 70s? Check. Xavier’s hover chair? Check.

Days of Future Past is a sequel to both X-Men: First Class and X-Men: The Last Stand. In the future the last remaining X-Men (Wolverine, Xavier, Magneto, Storm, Iceman, Colossus and Shadowcat) are battling giant sentinels and are tired of it, quite frankly, so they send Wolverine’s mind back to the past in the hope he can stop Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) from assassinating a political figure and change the course of history. X1 and X2 director Bryan Singer is back in the directing chair and reuniting both casts has turned this into an event movie for X-Men fans.

Edge of Tomorrow

edge-of-tomorrow-cruise-blunt Following Oblivion last year Tom Cruise is once again in sci-fi mode, and his next is Edge of Tomorrow. The movie takes place in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage, an inexperienced officer who is thrown onto the battlefield and killed within minutes. The character is stuck in a time loop and has to relive the fighting and death day after day, but each time he gets closer to defeating them. Emily Blunt also stars as Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski.

Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) directs from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher), Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci (Star Trek), D.W. Harper and Joby Harold.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is the sequel to the highly successful Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which once again stars Andy Serkis as Caesar. The story takes place 10 years after the events of the first film and most of the human population has been wiped out by a virus. Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, and Keri Russell play the lead humans, who have banded together in order to survive and manage to find peace with Caesar and his apes. The peace doesn’t last long, however. Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield, is in charge this time round.

Jupiter Ascending

Andy and Lana Wachowski are no strangers to sci-fi movies having directed The Matrix and the sci-fi elements of Cloud Atlas. Their next project is Jupiter Ascending which is set in a futuristic world where humans are seen as second class citizens. The lead character is Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a stargazing Earth-bound laborer whose meaningless existence takes a drastic turn when she encounters Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically-engineered guardian sent to save her from intergalactic assassins. But why would an highly-advanced alien want to kill this human? Maybe, it has something to do with Jupiter’s genetic connection to the royal throne, which is currently seated by a wicked queen. Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Doona Bae also star.

Interstellar_trailer Christopher Nolan is making a sci-fi movie in 2014 and it will involve wormholes, time travel and alternate dimensions. Matthew McConaughey plays the lead character who is an ambitious space explorer on a radical voyage through a wormhole. Nolan and Warner Bros. are keeping most story details under-wraps; however we know the film has an impressive cast which includes Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, Topher Grace, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, David Oyelowo, and Bill Irwin.

  • Tyrsca

I wonder how Sean Bean dies in Jupiter Ascending

    • Abel Quesada

      Great comment.

Jupiter Ascending honestly looks like crap, if I do say so myself, and Edge Of Tomorrow… meh. Too much Tom Cruise. Divergent looks very good, as does Interstellar and Transcendence. I am a robot freak and am therefor dying for Robocop. Apes… okay, just let it go, Hollywood.

Seems the sci-fi genre still has some originality… but the cinematic world is in desperate need of fresh ideas. Let’s create a new franchise that people will revere along the lines of Indiana Jones and the other greats! I’m sure those guys had no idea of the legacy they were going to create!

    • ???? ????

They all look like crap actually.

Except maybe Transcendence – cause depp doesnt play in crappy movies. and also it has interesting plot.

All others is just regular stamps of man_saving_woman_sci-fi.SO_ORIGINAL_DO_NOT_STEAL™

Frankly most of these movies don’t look that great.
