Despite word over the weekend that Ryan Gosling was in talks to join Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger, Entertainment Weekly has heard the actor won’t appear in the film due to scheduling conflicts with the Logan’s Run remake which begins filming later this year.
This leaves the door open for another actor to join Depp, who will play The Lone Ranger’s Native American companion Tonto. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is in charge, and production may begin in the second half of 2011 when Depp has finished filming Dark Shadows with Tim Burton.
In the film The Texas Rangers chase down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, but the gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.
