Piranha 3D may have only opened at the #6 spot when it was released back in August behind the likes of The Expendables, Eat Pray Love and Vampires Suck, but $70 million worldwide and surprisingly good reviews is more than enough for Dimension Films to greenlight a sequel.
According to Deadline John Gulager (Feast) will direct and screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (writers of the last four Saw movies) have been assembled to write the sequel, which will be titled Piranha 3DD in celebration of the bra size which most of the female cast members will no doubt have.
The aim is to release the film in August 2011, which is around 10 months away, but a $10-$20 million horror film about piranhas can easily be rushed. This isn’t The Hobbit.
The characters who survived the first film may return, and there will be new additions to keep the piranhas satisfied.
