Jamie Foxx has already been confirmed to play the villain Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be Peter Parker’s only foe. According to Heat Vision Paul Giamatti is in talks to play The Rhino. British actress Felicity Jones (Hysteria) is also said to be up for an unspecified role.
The Rhino, real name Aleksei Mikhailovich Sytsevich, was a Russian thug in the comics who underwent a life-threatening series of chemical and radiation treatments which made superhumanly strong. Aleksei’s powerful armor became permanently bonded to his form, and was modeled after the hide of a rhinoceros. He possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and durability.
The Rhino will be yet another addition to the line-up, which also includes Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson and Chronicle actor Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn. Spider-Man 3 suffered from having a villain over-load, so hopefully the producers have learned from that and don’t throw any more into the mix. In the recent comics Rhino has actually allied with Spider-Man, so there’s a chance he won’t be a full blown villain.
Filming on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will begin filming in February for a May 2014 release. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will be back as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, and Marc Webb will once again be directing.
