Pacific Rim barely passed $100 million in the US, however with a global total of $407 million (over $100 million of which came from China) director Guillermo del Toro and writer Travis Beacham are now working on the sequel. There’s obviously a demand for one. No green light has been given from Warner Bros. just yet, but it’s a positive sign for those who liked the first film.
Guillermo del Toro recently confirmed the news to IGN:
We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.
Pacific Rim was saved by China, and I imagine whether the sequel goes ahead or not will be down to the Chinese market. It continues to grow, so a sure-fire hit will no doubt be tempting for Warner Bros.
