The first trailer for the soon to be released, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, has been unveiled online. The film, based on Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson book series, is a sequel to 2010’s moderately successful Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and sees Logan Lerman reprise his role as the titular demi-god.
This time, Percy and the gang must travel into the sea of monsters in order to retrieve the mythical Golden Fleece, which will save their dying safe haven, Camp Half-Blood.
New additions to the cast include Nathan Fillion (TV’s Firefly), Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games) and Anthony Head (TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer) but notable omissions include Sean Bean (TV’s Game of Thrones) and Pierce Brosnan (Goldeneye).
The trailer suggests that the sequel will be mildly entertaining with a few new monsters to threaten our teenage heroes, the Kraken-typer creature being the most impressive, but nothing much else. After a lukewarm critical response and a solid yet unspectacular $226 global cume, this film does seem wholly unnecessary.
