A new image from the forthcoming comic book adaptation, The Wolverine, has been released via the movie’s Facebook page. The screenshot shows the titular hero, Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman), looking decidedly moody and somewhat distrustful of his surroundings. It is accompanied by the caption “The past is always behind you, but the memories still remain”.
This is an intriguing image because it depicts the immortal hero in a much less confident manner. Interestingly, he has turned his back, which suggests that he is attempting to maintain a low profile, and coupled with his hesitant facial expression, it is clear that this is a character who has become much more cautious over time.
The image is very noir-esque and seems to be overly reliant on a blue / black contrast, which, although adequate, is not great. The lighting fails to capture the sense of foreboding, which is etched across Hugh Jackman’s face, and although it does appear respectful of its comic book roots, the aesthetics of the image undermine the obvious emotion on display.
The Wolverine is due for release in the US and UK on 26th July 2013.
Here’s the synopsis:
Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern-day Japan.
Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed.
Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.
Hugh Jackman will also reprise his role as Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the Bryan Singer directed sequel to X-Men: First Class. He will be joined Peter Dinklage, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, and Shawn Ashmore.
Filming will begin in April for a July 2014 release.
