The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, set to bring the brilliant cast of characters back into the forefront, may have found a director, according to an exclusive on Vulture at New York Entertainment. James Bobin, co-creator of The Flight of the Conchords, and writer on Da Ali G Show, apparently has the job – “if he wants it.” Vulture was told the development by a mysterious “Disney insider.”

I love the Muppets – they’ve been deserving of a new theatrical feature for a long time (their last was Muppets from Space in 1999). The screenplay for the new film was written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller, who were both involved with Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Segel as lead actor and writer, Stoller as director). While I wasn’t a huge fan of Sarah Marshall, Flight of the Conchords is absolutely hilarious at times, and the combination of all these guys could bring something fresh to the Muppets.

The only problem at the moment is that Bobin has recently been offered a Judd Apatow-related project as well – nothing against Judd, but I hope he chooses the Muppets. There’s something about the strange humour of Conchords that could just “click”…maybe.
