Michael Caine is in final negotiations to join Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, according to Heat Vision. Brendan Fraser won’t be returning for the sequel due to ‘scheduling conflicts’, and will instead be replaced by Dwayne Johnson. Josh Hutcherson who played Fraser’s nephew in the original will be back though.
The film sees Hutcherson partnering with his mother’s boyfriend (Johnson) as they take a trip to a mythical island to find his missing grandfather (Caine). The role will apparently see Sir Michael engaging in several chase sequences, including one involving giant bees (I always knew Christopher Nolan wasn’t using Caine to his full potential in those Batman movies).
The original made over $241 million worldwide on a $60 million budget which got Warner Bros. interested in making a sequel. Filming will begin later this year in Hawaii under the direction of Brad Peyton (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) for a September 2011 release.
