M. Night Shyamalan is thinking about making a Split sequel and if you’ve yet to see the director’s best film since Unbreakable, this is where you should stop reading.
So this is your last chance if you haven’t yet seen Split, go away, NOW! Seriously, major spoilers that will ruin the movie for you. That is unless you don’t really care about spoilers, in which case welcome and read on.
How can I say this, Split is kind of a sequel to Shyamalan’s Unbreakable, which came out way back in 2000. And the incredible thing is you don’t find that out until the very end of the movie. Apparently Kevin, who is played by James McAvoy in the new film, was at one point a character in one of Shyamalan’s early drafts for Unbreakable. He didn’t make the cut, but the director still wanted to use Kevin in a future spin-off. That’s Split, the origin story of a new villain in the Unbreakable universe. Yep, we watched a sequel to Unbreakable and we didn’t even know it.
So what’s next? Probably not Unbreakable 2, and probably not Split 2 either. The obvious joke here would be to call it Unbreakable 3, but I doubt movie studios would find that funny. Suffice it to say in the not so distance future we’re very likely going to see Bruce Willis’ David Dunn face off against McAvoy’s Horde, since that’s exactly what Split is setting up. M. Night Shyamalan is now officially on a completely different level as far as twists go.
