Paramount Pictures have confirmed that Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live, Bridesmaids) has joined the all-star cast of Anchorman 2, according to Deadline. The talented actress will join mainstays Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Christina Applegate in the movie. Wiig is reportedly in negotiations to play Carell’s wife.
Here’s the scoop from Deadline
Paramount insiders tonight confirmed to me what Christina Applegate tweeted a few hours ago: “So excited Kristen Wiig has joined our cast for Anchorman 2.” The sequel formally titled Anchorman: The Legend Continues stars Will Ferrell and Steve Carell plus Wiig in what the studio says is a “new role”. The former Saturday Night Live breakout and Bridesmaids star reportedly had been in talks to play the wife of Brick Tamland (Carell)
When Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was released in 2004, Will Ferrell was by far the biggest box-office draw, following the success of Old School and Elf. Now, almost a decade later his star-power has faded considerably, largely due to his inability to appeal to a global audience. The problem is, a similar fate has also befallen fellow cast-mates Carell and Rudd.
Anchorman was a surprise domestic success, but it bombed at the international markets and even though it has become a cult classic, a decade is a long time to wait before capitalising on its momentum.
Anchorman 2 has always seemed like an unnecessary sequel, but with the right marketing push, its planned 20th December release could prove to be excellent counter-programming to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which is due for release on 13th December 2013.
