Deadline has reported that Universal’s Kick-Ass 2 will now be released in the US on 16th August 2013. The cult superhero sequel is adapted from both Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass comic series, and also its Hit-Girl spin-off, with elements taken from both comics. The film was originally penned for release on 28th June but the studio has opted to capitalise on a relatively quiet end to the summer season instead.
Kick-Ass 2 will now fill the slot originally occupied by another Universal title, 2 Guns. The Denzel Washington/Mark Wahlberg thriller’s release has been moved forward and it’s now due on 2nd August. The film is directed by Jeff Wadlow (Cry Wolf) and sees Aaron Taylor-Johnson reprise his role has Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass and Chloë Grace Moretz as Mindy Macready/Hit-Girl.
The sequel also features Jim Carrey (Bruce Almighty), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Role Models), John Leguizamo (The Happening, The Lincoln Lawyer) and Donald Faison (TV’s Scrubs).
Here’s a brief synopsis for Kick-Ass 2:
Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.
The film is due for release in the UK on 19th July 2013.
