Kate Winslet has successfully avoided big commercial projects since Titanic became a colossal hit in 1997. Instead the actress focused on interesting dramas and managed to land Oscar nominations in 2002, 2005, 2007, finally winning Best Actress in 2009 for The Reader.
Now Winslet is doing something a bit more popcorn-friendly having signed on to appear in Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of Divergent , the popular young adult novel written by first time author Veronica Roth.
Here’s the press release:
Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate company, confirmed today that Kate Winslet will star as “Jeanine Matthews” in the studio’s futuristic action adventure DIVERGENT.
Summit Entertainment’s DIVERGENT will star Golden Globe nominated Shailene Woodley and Theo James who join other confirmed cast members Jai Courtney, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort and Maggie Q. The futuristic action adventure, based on author Veronica Roth’s New York Times best seller, will be directed by Neil Burger from a script by Vanessa Taylor and commences principal photography this April in Chicago. Summit will release the film theatrically in North America in THE HUNGER GAMES slot on Friday, March 21, 2014.
DIVERGENT is a thrilling adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.
The role of Jeanine Matthews will be an interesting one for Winslet. The character is the leader of Erudite, one of the five factions in the world of Divergent, and the only faction dedicated to knowledge, intelligence, curiosity, and astuteness. Matthews is a villain in the film and features in the second novel, Insurgent, so this will likely mark Winslet’s first franchise role.
