According to Vulture Joel Edgerton (The Thing, Warrior) is in talks to lead the cast of 300: Battle of Artemisia.
If a deal is reached Edgerton would play Themosticles, “the famed archon and general who led the Greeks to victory against the invading Persians in 480 BCE”. Last year graphic novel writer Frank Miller said Themistocles is the lead character and “became warlord of Greece and built their navy”. He is also a “lying, conniving, brilliant, heroic figure” who was nicknamed ‘The Subtle Serpent’.
The story also features Xerxes, the Persian leader who is an antagonist in 300, and turns him into more of a pivotal figure. He’s a man in search of godhood after his farther died battling Themistocles. The story takes place over the course of several years, but the focal point is the battle of Artemisium, which occurred in 480 BC.
Joel Edgerton has been in demand since the Australian crime/drama Animal Kingdom, and is currently shooting Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby opposite Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. He’s already training physically to play an MMA fighter in Warrior, but if he takes on 300: Battle of Artemisia he’ll most likely have to endure the infamous ‘300 workout’.
