Jessica Chastain in talks to play Jane in ‘Tarzan’ reboot?

zero dark thirty ImageJessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Mama) is very hot property in Hollywood at the moment, and now she is in line to play Jane in the Tarzan reboot, according to the New York Post. The Oscar nominated actress would likely star opposite Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained) and Alexander Skarsgård (TV’s True Blood, Battleship) who is the front-runner to play the titular hero, Tarzan.

Here’s the scoop:

Jessica Chastain, Queen of the Jungle? The overworked actress and recent Oscar nominee is said to be the first choice to play Jane in a new version of “Tarzan,” reports The Post’s Richard Johnson. Alexander Skarsgard is reportedly in the running to play the title character in the Warner Bros. reboot. In this story, the jungle boy is fully assimilated to life in London when Queen Victoria asks him to investigate troubles in the Congo. Samuel L. Jackson is rumored to play an ex-mercenary who helps Tarzan save the Congo from a vicious warlord. David Yates, who helmed four “Harry Potter” movies, will direct.

David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 & 2) is a very capable director but the premise currently sounds very average. By placing an adult Tarzan in London, the dramatic interest in the character is immediately lessened. This is a fantastic opportunity to introduce the iconic character to an entirely new generation, and although Alexander Skarsgård would be perfect for the role, this project is largely dependent on a strong narrative.

Tarzan known to most as the feral child raised in the African jungles by the Mangani “great apes”; he later experiences civilization only to largely reject it and return to the wild as a heroic adventurer.

Jessica Chastain will next be seen starring opposite James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class) in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His & Hers. These are two separate films that explore the relationship of a New York couple from the perspective of the Husband and Wife respectively. A release date has yet to be announced.

Jessica Chastain seems like a good choice. I’ll bet she’d be a great Jane if they were filming Robin Maxwell’s book, Jane: The Woman Who Loved Tarzan. But Alexander Skarsgard is NOT a good choice for Tarzan. He just doesn’t fit the image of Tarzan. I wish the director, David Yates, would reconsider casting the lead role.
