Following Darren Aronofsky’s departure from The Wolverine three months ago 20th Century Fox have been searching for a replacement, with various names said to have been in the mix, and now Deadline has word that James Mangold is 20th Century Fox and Hugh Jackman’s choice to direct.
Mangold is the director of Girl, Interrupted, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma and most recently Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. He’s no Aronofsky, but he’s certainly capable of delivering a solid movie, one that should be better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Apparently Mangold was on a short list that also contained Warrior director Gavin O’Connor and Brooklyn’s Finest helmer Antoine Fuqua, but Mangold was the top choice and will now enter negotiations to direct. Fox aims to begin filming later this year in Japan.
The script, written by The Usual Suspects writer Christopher McQuarrie, takes Wolverine to Japan where he falls for a woman named Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord.
