Marvel today announced that English actress Hayley Atwell will play Peggy Carter in The First Avenger: Captain America. Initially Emily Blunt and Keira Knightley were considered; however after they passed it looked like Sex and the City 2 actress Alice Eve would land the part. Just last week we heard that both Eve and Hayley Atwell were screen testing in London for the role of Captain America’s love interest, and it seems Atwell was the actress who impressed Marvel and director Joe Johnston.
Hayley Atwell has appeared in The Duchess (alongside Keira Knightly) and Brideshead Revisited, and was seen last year in The Prisoner TV mini-series alongside Ian McKellen and James Caviezel. According to Marvel “Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America while they fought together in the war effort. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.”
The First Avenger: Captain America will start filming in June and the cast includes Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, and Sebastian Stan as sidekick Bucky. According to HeatVision Hugo Weaving is still in negotiations to play the villain Red Skull, so hopefully those talks conclude soon.
