Making a sequel to Blade Runner after 35 years is a tremendously difficult task for any filmmaker and so far it looks like Denis Villeneuve is very much on the right track with Blade Runner 2049.
Even after seeing it in already two trailers and this amazing behind the scenes featurette, I’m still having a hard time believing this is actually happening, a sequel to Blade Runner is almost upon us. The first film wasn’t a hit when it came out and it took years for people to embrace it. It’s now 2017, only two years away from the 2019 setting of the original and we’re getting a big budget sequel set 30 years later. At this point I’m in no way worried that 2049 can be anything less than one of the best films of the year, but I also understand that it can’t be just like the first film, not in 2017, for better or worse depending on what kind of fan you are. I myself lean on wanting a new Blade Runner, even if it’s in many ways different.
Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario) directed Blade Runner 2049 while Hampton Fancher (who also co-wrote the original) and Michael Green (Logan) penned the screenplay based on characters from the novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’ by Philip K. Dick. Starring in the movie are Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis and more.
Blade Runner 2049 opens October 6th in the US and almost everywhere else.
