We’re nearly half way through Game of Thrones Season 3, but that isn’t too early for Amazon as they’ve just made the show available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray. No word yet on the Game of Thrones Season 3 Blu-ray release date, but historically fans have had to wait a while, so that will likely be the case here.
Previous DVD and Blu-ray releases for Game of Thrones have been around 8 months after the season finale. The final episode of Season 2 was aired in June 2012, however HBO had fans waiting until February 2013 before they could buy it for themselves. This is obviously quite a long delay, especially at a time when movie studios are trying to reduce the home media release window to 3 months or less. One advantage for HBO was the hype that built upon the DVD/Blu-ray release, which carried over when Season 3 started airing less than a month later.
Game of Thrones Season 3 DVD Release Date schedule
The table below shows all the seasons to date, when they ended, and the eventual home media release.
|Season||Finale Episode||DVD/Blu-ray Release Date|
|1||June 2011||March 2012|
|2||June 2012||February 2013|
|3||June 2013||Feb/March 2014 (estimate)|
The ratings for Game of Thrones Season 3 continue to rise with each episode, and the latest one titled “And Now His Watch Is Ended” hit a record high 4.9 million viewers in the US (plus millions of downloads around the world). The episode saw Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) freeing the Unsullied and marching out of Astapor with her dragons, and fans still have more epic moment to look forward to in this season and beyond.
