Disney has finally released our first look at Maleficent, the live-action take on the wicked fairy godmother who cast the original spell on Sleeping Beauty. As it’s only a teaser trailer there isn’t a whole lot of footage on show, but what we do see looks quite good. I think the strategy for this trailer was just to let everyone know that one of the most well known actresses in the world (Angelina Jolie) is playing one of Disney’s most iconic villains.
Watch the trailer below:
“A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal — an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom — and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.”
As well as Jolie as Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora the film stars Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. First time director Robert Stromberg is in charge (he served as production designer on Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful) and Maleficent will be released May 30, 2014.
