X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer has just tweeted that American Horror Story actor Evan Peters will play Quicksilver in his upcoming movie, which is currently shooting in Montreal. The news is quite interesting timing-wise as The Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon was only recently talking about including the character in his film.

Both 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios have the rights to use Quicksilver and his sister the Scarlet Witch in films, but given how popular comic book movies are nowadays it would seem strange for Fox to just ‘give’ Marvel Studios a free shot at characters. As this casting is rather late in the game (Days of Future Past has been shooting for nearly 2 months) I wouldn’t be surprised if including Quicksilver is a reaction from Fox after hearing about Whedon’s plans.
The characters of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch do seem to fit better within the X-Men world, despite teaming up with The Avengers in the comics. They are mutants and the children of Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto. Marvel wouldn’t be able to refer to that history so the Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch we see in The Avengers 2 would be slightly different incarnations of the characters. It seems Whedon has solid plans for them alongside Iron Man, Thor and co, but I can’t help feeling Quicksilver is being shoehorned in X-Men: Days of Future Past thanks to some higher-ups at Fox.
I guess we’ll have to see how things develop, and whether Whedon/Marvel still plan to use the siblings in The Avengers 2. Maybe it’s all planned and Evan Peters will play Quicksilver in both films.
