Last month we heard that Daniel Craig was in talks to play one of the lead roles in David Fincher’s remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Craig has yet to be confirmed for the part, which also had Brad Pitt interested at one point, however Sony has set a December 21st 2011 release date for the first film in the planned trilogy.
The story revolves around a young woman named Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant computer hacker who has a photographic memory, and a journalist named Mikael Blomkvist who recruits her to find a woman who has been missing for 40 years. Craig would play Blomkvist, and Sony are now looking at a bunch of young actresses to play the meaty role of Salander.
While actresses like Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) have been mentioned as possible Lisbeth candidates, I’m told that actresses including Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Sara Snook (Sleeping Beauty), Rooney Mara (The Social Network) and Sophie Lowe (Blame) have also entered the fray, and will test shortly for the role, in a process similar to the one Columbia held before choosing Andrew Garfield to play Spider-Man.
I am not really familiar with any of these actresses so I can’t comment on who is right for the part, although as Rooney Mara just filmed The Social Network with Fincher she may have an advantage. The role will probably be a career-defining one for whoever wins it so I imagine all the actresses will be acting their butts off during the screen tests.
Here’s the trailer for the Swedish version:
