Edi Gathegi, the Kenyan born actor best known for his roles in The Twilight Saga and Gone Baby Gone, will be joining Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class according to Deadline.
Gathegi will play a character called Darwin who has the power of “reactive evolution” which allows him to automatically adapt to any situation or environment (this power will no doubt come into play when convenient for the plot). Examples from the comics include gaining night-vision after a few seconds in the dark and forming gills after being submerged in water.
This should be the first of the late casting confirmations as we enter the final week of July. Filming is set to begin next month in London so we will probably be hearing about other mutants joining the ranks in the near future.
X-Men: First Class will chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.
