Duncan Jones will direct Warcraft

world-of-warcraft-movie Legendary Pictures’ upcoming film adaptation of the hugely successful Warcraft universe has found a director in Duncan Jones. The Warcraft universe of video games is best known for the massively multiplayer online role playing game World of Warcraft, or WoW. However the Warcraft universe got its start with a series of real time strategy games comprised of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

Jones came to prominence as a director in 2009 with his phenomenal sci-fi hit Moon, made for about a million dollars. His next film Source Code had a much larger budget, roughly 35 million dollars. Warcraft will dwarf (no pun intended) that with an estimated budget of over 100 million dollars.

Legendary Pictures is probably best known for adapting many recent DC comics into films like The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel. Comics and video games often have overlapping fan bases and themes so it’s encouraging that Legendary is taking the helm here. The source material for Warcraft is nearly endless, so the script written by Charles Leavitt could be about anything, and is being kept under wraps by Legendary. Production on the film will begin in March and they are aiming for a 2015 release date.

This is a horrible Idea. They need someone who could do to “Arthas” what Nolan did to “Batman”. Not a Tolkien reboot with an Indie director.
