Darren Aronofsky Talks Robocop

by Liam on October 30, 2008 · Comments

Back in July it was announced that the director of The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream, would be directing the Robocop sequel/reboot. This meant that there was a 95% chance that the remake will not suck. Since July things have been a bit quite, as Aronofsky has been busy on other films, however he recently spoke to Empire about how things are progressing.

“It’s a real reinvention,” he told us, responding to those rumours that the movie would somehow follow on or be a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original. “Me and David Self are working on the screenplay. He’s a great, great writer and we’re trying to do something new and fresh. We’ll see what happens when the screenplay comes.”

“I’m a big fan of the original. It still holds up as an amazing film, and I think it’s more just looking at that same type of material in the 21st century and seeing where it leads us.”

If all goes to plan Robocop will be released sometime in 2010.

Good luck with that. I loved Robocop as a kid, but it doesn't usually hold up to viewing now. Here's hoping they can give the movie the substance it seemed to have when I was too young to know better.

Have to agree, Robocop 1 was great, 2 was even better, 3 was only so-so; but after watching the worst movie ever, The Fountain, not too sure regarding this new Robocop.
Can you imagine Mr. Aronofsky doing the same to the franchise?
Robocop in a space bubble with some dumb tree? Watching the end of the fim first then having the film end with the beginning?
I really was looking forward to The Fountain. What a piece of disjointed garbage that was. Way too abstract except for probably coke addicts.

haha, i completely understand why someone might not like the fountain....but its still a film, and your response is still completely ignorant. coke addicts, give me a break dude...

You really think that The Fountain was "too abstract"?

The don't watch anything of David Lynch or Alejandro Jodorowsky.

It will make your brain come out of your eyes...

I'm really looking forward to this, but I'm not so sure that the way Aronofsky directs fits much in the Robocop's series. But only destiny and final work would tell that

I have to disagree with Larry - having just finished watching The Fountain it had a profound effect on me, and inspired me in a way that I have a hard time describing - if only to say that my marriage going forward will be strengthened by the inspiration I took from the film to express certain feelings to her that had been locked away within my heart for a long time.

If this director can infuse such raw passion into another sci fi film, such as Robocop (which I too grew up loving) I wholeheartedly look forward to seeing it in the theater just as soon as it comes out.

This is amazing! I can not wait to see what he will do with this film. I am a big fan of all of his movies.

well I haven't seen the Fountain but by the brief discussion started here, I want to now for sure. And I'll check out Robocop I'm sure.
