The Daredevil movie rights have sensationally reverted back to Marvel/Disney from 20th Century Fox. This has actually been on the cards for a while and it seemed that when Joe Carnahan (Narc, The A-Team) failed with his last-ditch attempt at a reboot last year, the writing was on the wall.
This means that Matt Murdock/Daredevil will be free to appear in future Marvel/Disney releases, and that will surely open the door for an appearance in some Avengers-centric movies.
Here’s the scoop from Deadline
The blogosphere is going wild as Marvel chief Kevin Feige does interviews for Iron Man 3 and acknowledges that Daredevil has returned to the Marvel fold at Disney. We told you this was going to happen last August, when a last ditch attempt to shape a movie with Joe Carnahan cratered. Ben Affleck starred in the original film, and he’s doing way more interesting things now as a writer/director/actor/producer. Without him, it was pretty clear that Fox wasn’t confident about bankrolling a superhero-sized movie based on the character and that the brass at the studio wasn’t at all upset about coming out on the losing end of the witching hour of when Marvel and Disney got back those rights.
Here’s a bit more information on the character:
Living in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from an oncoming vehicle. While he no longer can see, the radioactive exposure heightens his remaining senses beyond normal human ability. His father, a boxer named Jack Murdock, supports him as he grows up, though Jack is later killed by gangsters after refusing to throw a fight. After donning a yellow and black, and later a dark red, costume, Matt seeks out revenge against his father’s killers as the superhero Daredevil, fighting against his many enemies including Bullseye and the Kingpin. Daredevil’s nickname is “the Man Without Fear”.
Daredevil previously hit our screens in 2003 with the self-titled movie starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. The film went on to gross $179 million dollars at the worldwide box-office but was critically panned.
Expect Marvel/Disney to add a Daredevil movie to their schedule very soon.
