Chronicle 2 has “a really dark script”

chronicle Image A sequel to Chronicle has been in development ever since the movie made $124 million worldwide last year. While the film was a great standalone movie it only cost 20th Century Fox $13 million to make, so you can see why the studio wants more.

In a recent interview screenwriter Max Landis, who wrote the first film, said Chronicle 2 “moving along” but as he and director Josh Trank are busy with other projects it could be a while before we see it.

From IGN:

“The truth is when you have a movie that was as successful as Chronicle was, it’s not as quick of a process. There are a lot more voices coming in and saying ‘This is what the sequel should be’ because there’s a bigger expectation and a bigger fear of failure. And that’s really what’s going on with Chronicle 2.

“[Helmer] Josh [Trank] is directing Fantastic Four. I’m doing a hundred other movies. Chronicle 2 has become this question of ‘How do we all make a movie that we all respect?’. And that’s true to what Chronicle is. There’s no one at the studio who wants to make a bad movie. They all want to make a good movie just as much as I do. We’re not fighting.”

Landis went on to say that “it’s just a really dark script” and some compromise is needed before the studio is happy with it, however he said it will definitely happen and he’s “60-75% sure that it will be a pretty damn good movie.”

Chronicle followed three high school friends who gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.

They should stop at 1. These “I’m holding the camera movies” got to stop. This movie wasn’t good.

According to Landis, The sequel is not gonna be a “Found footage”-film at all

    • Bane

im not huge fan of found footage movies but chronicle was awesome i thought

I agree about the “first person camera movies” but beyond that I thought Chronicle was pretty good, at least it was original.

I really liked this movie. I think I’ve watched it at least 3 times. It was orginal and creepy at the same time. HOWEVER, I don’t know if they should make a sequel. The movie was good as it was, and I don’t see any new material coming out of it. Good VS Evil. Friend VS Friend.

    • mrRite

      Dude, i rewatched it..

      1) before andrew shows up to the hole with his cam, others were there (potential new supers, hmm)
      2) the government both knows about the crystal AND the kids
      3) dude is learning energy control from buddhists
      Lots of room for sequels

If Chronicle made 125 million im pretty confident in releasing mine (TLK) Title released on a later day.

The biggest flaw of Chronicle was the aspect of working cameras in every moment it wanted to capture. Which was also a strength, so it’s hard to say. Other than that I don’t want them to try it again. The girlfriend holding cameras for us to see the boyfriend’s reactions was just too much.

I actually really liked this movie. I thought the whole psychology around the wallflower losing control and using newly acquired power for evil very interesting. Maybe I’m looking too far for a meaning, but that did make me enjoy this movie all the more. I’ll definitely watch the sequel!

  • walllle

you people complain about first person movies yet in the last 5-6 years how many terrible movies have been first person?

    • Ian ‘link’ Fletcher

      An absolute ton.

      • robert

        what ton of movies?

        • Ian ‘link’ Fletcher

Loads, Apollo 18, loads of crappy horror films. Not that there aren’t good found footage films,

          • duey

            Not convincing enough…name more please.

          • Ian ‘link’ Fletcher

Google found footage horror films, and then read the results.

          • Steve W

Apollo 18, ALL the paranormal (not even marginally scary) Activity flicks, The Devil Inside, So amny DTV movies it;s not even funny!

As long as I don’t have to hear my name being rattled over again, good thing he is dead right? ANDREW!! ANDREW!! I mean seriously? You could’ve at least said Drew or No don’t do that must they have said his name so many times?

  • SuperShrug

Tell me whatever gave them their powers, resurrects the two that died, and the survivor has to be called back to battle two that aren’t so mortal or restrained by human nature anymore.

  • Robert Lipstreu

Since they’re set on making a sequel, the writers need to bring this full circle. Pick up where the 1st left off; Matt fulfilling the expectation the studio set by “[finding] out what happened to [them].” Elaborate on the ‘bio-Crystal’ that gave them their powers and why it was gone within 24-48 hours.

  • Jason

This movie, in my opinion, reminded me of dragon ball z. I could see energy balls flying after the last character’s visit from Quebec, right? Maybe he learns something and gains experience from monks. Totally kidding. But, this is a great platform to at least tap in to that type of concept.

  • Gabriel

Andrew isn’t dead. The sequel will be about his redemption.

  • Hurley

    I hated this movie.

  • abby

ummmmmmmmm isnt andrew and steve dead? How will they make a sequel?

  • Kevin Tiberius Rockhead

Having read the comments, it’s obvious that people have mixed feelings about this movie, and that’s fine. Everyones entitled to their opinion. Personally, i loved the movie. I loved the inventive use of the first camera technique and i loved that they didn’t explain how they got their powers. sometimes less is better in movies, not absolutely everything has to be explained. I agree though that it did get annoying at the end with Matt continually shouting “ANDREW, STOP!!!” every few seconds.

Seeing as how this was based in the “real world” (more so than MOS, but that’s a discussion for another thread), I don’t see how a sequel would work: Matt’s face is probably known worldwide now. As he is the only one left, unless some other people develop powers (in a Heroes kind of way) then what will the story be?

I know the movie was a financial success but sometimes I think certain movies deserve to just have one bite at the cherry, so to speak. Wish they had done that with the Highlander franchise (but that’s a topic for another thread too).

I seen Chronicles in the theater, not expecting much (mainly because sooo many “found footage” camera styled films just outright SUCK! Not to mention, a few even make you feel seasick) … But thankfully I was pleasantly surprised!! (even the hand-held camera theme worked well in this setting, adding to its believability)

However, my GF didn’t enjoy the film at all. She didn’t like the ending (simply not a fan of “dark movies”) … Some ppl just like super-hero movies that are more surreal (more comic-booky, or fantasy like) … don’t get me wrong, I like Superman, Wolverine, X-men, Spiderman, etc. / But Chronicles wasn’t intended to be like those.
… Chronicles felt REAL, like this COULD possibly happen … or more importantly, Chronicles posed that question in our minds that, IF this did happen, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

It’s a scary thought, but “ABSOLUTE POWER, CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY.”

*Having said all of that, I don’t fully support a PART 2 (just can’t see a scenario that would make-sense) … Sometimes a great film needs to standalone & fans can ponder the WHAT IF’s for yrs to come. / Hollywood seems to always wanna “milk” it’s franchises until their ruined.

***Sorry for the re-post viewers!!! I didn’t log into my DISQUS profile. But I did add a cool picture with my post ABOVE … ;)

  • Samps

Everybody died. How do you make a sequel from that?

  • givecreditwhencreditisdo

the sequel should be about matt finding out what happened to them like he said he would at the end of the movie

  • stpetersburg

I liked the Chronicle remake, think it was called Man of Steel. Didn’t everyone notice? That end sequence played just like Chronicle’s fight, down to having to end a life.

  • Marvelfan

Well we probably won’t ever get an AKIRA movie, but i’d say Chronicle borrowed enough from it that we really don’t need a live action AKIRA movie now.

  • Sharlto

Max Landis isn’t attached to Chronicle anymore, because Fox didn’t like his script.
    This is not good news.

  • cdunny

I thought this movie was great. However, making a sequel will be difficult. I hope it is not as big of a fail as The Donnie Darko sequel. When you tap into dark, uncharted waters, and then kill off the main character… a sequel is not exactly the easiest thing to build up.

  • cmTITAN

not much of a fan of unnecessary sequels… or found-footage films for that matter, but if this next movie is as good as the first, or better, then I’m all for it. people complaining about it need to realize that its happening because YOU THE VIEWER WHO PAID TO SEE IT… so quitcha bitchin
