After a pretty extensive search with actors such as Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, and Zachary Levi testing, Marvel has finally found the man who will lead Guardians of the Galaxy. According to Deadline Chris Pratt, known for his roles in Moneyball and more recently Zero Dark Thirty, will play Star-Lord, a human interplanetary policeman who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of superhuman and extra-terrestrial adventurers dedicated to the safeguarding of the Milky Way Galaxy from any force that threatens the security or liberty of its various people.
The team includes their leader Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer (a resurrected superhuman warrior and nemesis of Thanos), Groot (a plant monster who can control trees), Gamora (a dangerous female assassin who has a preference for knives and swords) and Rocket Racoon (a genetically altered racoon who can fly a plane and carries a laser pistol).
The casting of Chris Pratt fits with how Marvel has cast previous films. He’s not well known, but as we saw with Chris Hemsworth in Thor, that doesn’t matter. Pratt can act and has a comedic bone (he recently appeared in Movie 43) which should fit the tone of the film perfectly, especially as he’ll have to pretend he’s talking to a gun wielding racoon.
With an August 2014 release date set we can probably expect filming to begin sometime soon, along with more casting announcements. James Gunn (Super) is directing.
