With four new releases, the weekend box office finally has some new blood in the top five. Animated sequel, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 has taken the #1 spot with $35 million, making it the 2nd or 3rd highest opening weekend for Sony Animation depending on the final count. The last Cloudy film opened with $30 million four years ago with a larger budget of $100 million compared to Cloudy 2’s $78 million.
Last week’s #1 film, Prisoners dropped 45% to $11.2 million for a second place finish and a total of $38.9 million so far. Unless it gets an awards bump down the road, the thriller is looking to end up in the $65-$70 million range.
Ron Howard’s latest film, Rush opened nationwide to decent results with $10.3 million. On a budget of $38 million, the Formula One movie is already putting up good numbers in Europe and should be a success overall.
Other newcomers Baggage Claim and Don Jon are in a heated race for 4th and 5th with $9.3 million and $9 million each. Those numbers are enough to cover both budgets and we should see the films turn a profit in the coming weeks.
