Best Makeup race down to seven films

Joseph Gordon Levitt in Looper ImageThe final seven candidates in the race for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar have been announced. The list includes a wide range of styles, from the extravagant aliens in Men in Black 3 to the subtle transformation of Joseph Gordon Levitt in Looper, featuring him as younger Bruce Willis. Academy members will be able to watch ten minute experts of all of these films and select the three which will become the nominees.

The films in the running are as follows:

Hitchcock
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Les Misérables
Lincoln
Looper
Men in Black 3
Snow White and the Huntsman

Notably left off the list is Cloud Atlas, which featured multiple actors playing as many as six different characters in multiple eras, often changing race and gender multiple times, as well as incorporating sci-fi, fantasy and historical elements.

The ten minute screening mentioned above will take place on January 5th and the nominees will be announced five days later from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The winners will be announced on February 24th from the Dolby Theater, and the show will air live on ABC.
