Thanks to the popularity of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the more recent success of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, the UK-based Ecosse Films is the latest to attempt another adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel “Treasure Island” for the big screen.
In typical Hollywood fashion, this new version of the pirate story will be “cooler and sexier,” concentrating more on the two-man-show of the infamous peg-leg Captain Long John Silver and young narrator Jim Hawkins. Empire suggests that the people at Ecosse want the update to be “hipper” for the next generation. How is that possible? Are they going to be those whale-hunting modern day pirates? I’m not sure how feasible it is to update a pirate tale for today’s youth, unless they are implying the tone of the film will be a bit more fresh and not a literal updating of the setting.
The company is supposedly looking for big stars to step into the two lead roles. I’m taking bets that Twilight‘s Taylor Lautner is being considered for the Hawkins role, so leave your wagers in the comments section. Who would you like to see play these iconic characters in the newest adaptation of Treasure Island?
