I speculated last month when Disney sent out a casting call for “professional dancers who are swimmers” that we could be seeing some mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and it appears that speculation was correct as Disney announced today that French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey has been cast as Syrena, a beautiful and alluring young mermaid encountered by Captain Jack Sparrow.
No other details were revealed, although considering Disney announced the casting in a press release the role could be quite important.
Last week it was reported that British actors Stephen Graham, Sam Claflin, and Max Irons are also in talks to join the film. Graham has appeared in Public Enemies and Gangs of New York, and will be playing a character called Scram. Sam Claflin and Max Irons are thought to be fighting for the ‘heartthrob’ role (Disney needs a new one as Orlando Bloom won’t be returning).
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will begin filming in June under the direction on Rob Marshall in Hawaii and will be released next May.
