Yes, that’s right, Arnold will be returning to one of his most iconic roles, Conan the Barbarian. Deadline has reported that Schwarzenegger will star in The Legend of Conan, which will be released by Universal Studios, the company behind the original Conan films.
This marks the third time that Schwarzenegger will play the role, after 1982’s Conan the Barbarian and the 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer. The original Conan was undoubtedly Schwarzenegger breakthrough role, transforming him from bodybuilder to well known actor.
Plans for a third Conan film with Schwarzenegger date back to the 80s, with a film to have been titled Conan the Conqueror originally set for release in 1987. It seems that last year’s forgettable reboot of Conan the Barbarian, starring Jason Momoa, will be swept under the rug and everyone will pretend it never happened.
Legend will also largely ignore the events of Conan the Destroyer, acting mainly as a follow up to the original film. The film will follow an aged Conan, and has been described as “Conan’s Unforgiven.”
No word yet if the franchise will remain R rated, or if it will be watered down to PG-13 as Live Free or Die Hard was. Universal expects the film out by summer 2014 and Chris Morgan may write the script if the upcoming Fast and Furious movies don’t take up all of his time.
