Disney’s annual D23 Expo is coming up in a few weeks, and speculation is that they may reveal casting news for Star Wars: Episode VII during the conference. The two names being thrown around are Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron.
Gosling is rumored to be up for the part of Luke Skywalker’s son, while Efron’s potential role is unknown at this time. Both actors are familiar with the Mouse House as they got their starts performing on the Mickey Mouse Club. But that was Kindergarten, and if hired for Star Wars, they will have graduated to Harvard.
However, supposedly Gosling wasn’t the studios first choice to play Luke’s son. They first went after Leonardo DiCaprio who turned down the role. That makes sense, as DiCaprio rarely appears in non-original properties (aside from The Great Gatsby). He also rarely appears in non-Scorsese directed movies. Instead, he is interested in starring in a sci-fi blockbuster entitled Robotech, which is based on the popular 1980s anime series. (So a non-original property I suppose, however not one that’s been on the big-screen yet). That film is said to be about “scientific advances discovered in an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. Using this technology, Earth constructs huge transformable mechs to battle three successive alien invasions.” So basically Pacific Rim 2?
What do you think about the choices of Gosling and Efron? If not them, who would you like to see appear in Star Wars: Episode VII?
