Abigail Breslin is busy these days. She just signed on to star in Brad Anderson’s The Hive opposite Halle Berry (it’s a movie about a call center employee who has to overcome her fears to save a teenage girl), and now Variety reports that the young actress has scared up a lead role in Haunter, a film that sounds like it shares some vague similarities with Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice.
Haunter is being billed as a “reverse ghost story” and follows “Lisa (Breslin), a teenage girl who died under sinister circumstances in 1986 along with her family. Trapped in their house together and unable to move on, Lisa must reach out from beyond the grave to help her present-day, living counterpart avoid the same fate she suffered.”
Those who have seen Burton’s 1988 film will surely see the similarities between Lisa’s situation and that of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, but it sounds like Haunter’s tone will be much more somber than the often-ridiculous Beetlejuice. Matthew Brian King wrote the script, and Splice and Cube director Vincenzo Natali will step behind the camera. Natali’s films have always had a bit of a weird streak to them (to say the least), so there’s the chance that things aren’t quite what they seem to be from this movie’s description. In any case, I’m glad to see the promising young Breslin move forward into a bit more serious roles, since I think she’s showed that she’s got enough talent to be an A-lister one day.
What do you think about the concept of Haunter, and are you interested in seeing Breslin star in it?
