X-Men: Days of Future Past will feature the fearsome robots known as Sentinels, according to an SFX interview with Mark Millar. The movie already boasts a cast that includes Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender; but this news is arguably the most important and will delight legions of die-hard X-Men fans worldwide.
Here’s Millar speaking to SFX:
“I don’t really want to give too much away but the Sentinels are a big feature of this story. They will be cool and this will deliver on all of the teasers. We’ve all been waiting for this ever since X-Men: The Last Stand showed us one of their heads. Now it is finally coming, and we only have to pay ten quid to see it in the cinema whereas they’re having to pay $100 million to deliver it. So I’m delighted [laughs].”
The Sentinels were previously seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, albeit very briefly, and are one of the X-Men’s most brutal adversaries. They represent strong anti-mutant beliefs, which are likened to racism, and have reached an iconic status since their comic book incarnation in 1965. Their daunting presence strikes fear into even the toughest mutants and they are programmed to hunt and kill, making them a devastating threat to the X-Men.
During the interview, Millar also hinted at a major role for Kitty Pryde:
“Ach, I cannae get into that [laughs]. As soon as I say something it will turn into a big internet story. Let me put it this way though: Kitty Pryde fans will not be disappointed.”
This is another indication that X-Men: Days of Future Past will be one of the truest comic book adaptations to date and lends to the possibility that Kitty Pryde may appear in The Wolverine, with that movie potentially acting as a lead-in to the upcoming X-Men sequel.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is due for release in the US and UK on 18th July 2014. The Wolverine is scheduled for release in the US and UK on 26th July 2013.
