Want to write for Filmonic?

by Liam on January 5, 2010 · View Comments

filmonic Update: The deadline has now past. Please do not apply unless you are some sort of movie blogging God!

Filmonic is entering it’s third year of existence, so I think it’s about time we shook things up a bit. Over the years there have been a few people writing for the site, with Dave joining last year to write reviews and the occasional news updates, however the site has mainly been updated by myself. I’ve enjoyed it. I wouldn’t have lasted all this time if I didn’t, however I think Filmonic would benefit from some new thoughts and opinions.

I’m thinking about bringing 2-3 new writers onboard who will post news, trailers and reviews. If you don’t write reviews that’s fine, neither do I. If you read movie sites and blogs on a daily basis and are interested in writing for Filmonic then read below!

  • Filmonic is run on a blogging platform called Wordpress. If you’ve had experience with Wordpress in the past then that’s a plus, however if not it’s quite simple to use. I’ll gladly teach you how to use it if you need help.
  • Ideally you would be able to write around 5 posts per week, however I value quality rather than quantity. I’d prefer you to write one great post a week, rather than 10 half hearted posts that could barely be considered ‘news’.
  • It doesn’t matter how old you are or where you live. As long as you can write a coherent sentence and know your stuff when it comes to films then you’ll be considered.
  • If you are chosen you will have a month ‘trial period’ where I will check your posts before publishing them.  After that period is over you will be able to publish news whenever you like,  and you will be paid for each post. It won’t be anything life changing, but it’ll probably pay for you to see Avatar in IMAX 3D again. Possibly even twice!

If you are still interested after reading all the above then send an email entitled ‘Write for Filmonic’ to contactfilmonic[at]gmail.com with the following:

  • Your name along with a few sentences about yourself. Where you live, your movie interests etc.
  • If you have past experience writing for a blog or website (include links)
  • Two original writing samples between 200-500 words long. Pick news topics from the past month or so and pretend you’re are writing them for Filmonic (you’re into movies, pretending should be easy!)
  • A list of 5 movie sites or blogs you read on a regular basis.

The deadline for applications will be Friday 15th January. Feel free to post any questions or comments below!

this is great news i wish i can write good i would enter but right now i just leave comments. also liam before u delete my comment like before when u get more people to write for filmonic.com will u start doing a podcast.
  • When did I delete your comment? I wouldn't delete comments from regular readers such as yourself.

I'm not that familiar with podcasts. I know a few movie sites have them, so I'll look into them!

If I get the gig you're welcome to molest my shaft anytime, Liam.
  • Hey guys, just want to say I visit this site every day! yes every day! I'm not applying for anything but just wanted to let you know you are doing a great job on this site!! And keep tracking Avatar's box office takes I think its awesome that it's doing so well (the 5% weekend drops are incredible). Maybe it will motivate the studios to take higher risks and we can see more original films in the future!

Avatar has made another 8 million on Monday, dropping only 53.4% from Sunday (by far the smallest drop in the top 10). Worldwide Avatar stands at $1,063,151,759, just 3 million shy of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest for 3rd place. It's expected to gross another 8-7.5 million on Tuesday so by now (Wednesday) it could pass Lord of the Rings: Return of the King ($1,119,110,941) for second place.

So either on Wednesday or Thursday Avatar will become the second highest grossing movie ever worldwide (unadjusted for inflation). By Friday it should be at 400 million in the US and another 780-800 million outside the US.
  • Alex
Forget what I said, Tuesday numbers are in and Avatar stands at $1,098.7 million so by the end of today it will become the second highest grossing movie worldwide.

    Woohoo Filmonic is expanding :D
Very nice...but please people dont suddenly start reporting about "love-comedys with Gerard Butler" or something ... I love the site because Liam doesnt^^
  • I wouldn't dream of hiring anyone who even considers spending hard earned money on a ron-com :)
  • hey Liam with the two writing samples do u want that in the email or do u want an attachment? Just trying to make sure I do this right.
  • Hi Ricardo, either is fine. As long as I can read them :)
  • cool beans

This such a great opportunity. I just have one question before I send you my email: by news topic, do you mean a film-related topic? But can I write one that's already been blogged here, but in my style? Or, because I'm not very up-to-date on movie news, can I write two short reviews instead?
    (sorry for the stupid questions)
  • Yes a film-related topic, even if it's been posted on Filmonic. It's just so I can see how you write about films, and your style.
  • Butters
I just applied! I look forward to hearing back

oh, so tempting! i do see everything- blockbuster, low-budget and independent, i know my English, i know everything that moves in world wide cinema but i don't know if i could channel my focus over some news that could be more important. That is why i also read Filmonic, you seem to pin point on some of things in cinema, that make absolute sense to stand out among all the things going on around movies.
