Wreck-It Ralph director Rich Moore has told Digital Spy that Nintendo’s iconic character, Super Mario, will appear in the Wreck-It Ralph sequel, if the project gets a green light. He explained that Mario deserves the perfect introduction and there wasn’t a suitable opportunity to feature him in the first instalment without undermining his importance.
Here’s the scoop:
“Over the course of developing the story I was always looking for the perfect moment or scene to include Mario,” he explained.
“But it had to be organic, it had to feel like [the scene] was made for him and unfortunately as we were developing the story and taking it to where it needed to go, that moment never made itself clear.”
“If we’re lucky enough to have a sequel then we’ll create that moment that’s perfect for [Mario].”
Wreck-It Ralph is a beautiful homage to classic video games. The animated movie focuses on the titular character, Ralph, who decides that he wants some recognition for all his hard-work, but most of all he just wants to be liked by the other characters. He embarks on an adventure through other arcade games in search of a medal that will prove his worth, but in his absence, his own game is threatened with decomission.
The movie was hugely enjoyable and successfully appealed to an adult audience through humour and narrative content, and children through engaging visuals and fun action sequences. The film has subsequently become a global smash-hit and will soon exceed $400 million worldwide.
Wreck-It Ralph is currently on general release in the UK and will be available on DVD/Blu-ray in the US next month.
