Hugh Jackman is set to play Wolverine for the seventh time as he’s in negotiations to appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past, according to THR. This news was expected as Wolverine featured in the comic book storyline, and follows the recent confirmation of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen returning as Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto.
The Days of Future Past comic storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps.
If Bryan Singer and 20th Century Fox are keeping the main elements from the story it means we can expect to see Wolverine (possibly aged slightly) fighting sentinels in the future along with other mutants. One iconic scene involved Wolverine getting vaporized down to his adamantium skeleton, and that would be a great moment to see on-screen.
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman will join James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult in the film, and we’ll almost certainly hear about more cast members joining in the near future. Filming is expected to begin in April 2013 for a July 2014 release.
The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold, will hit screens July 2013.
