One of the last remaining actors who can guarantee box office success, Will Smith, has taken some time off since Seven Pounds in 2008, instead opting to produce movies such as The Karate Kid for his son Jaden Smith. Although now according to Variety Will is ready to get back in front of the camera again, it’s just a matter of deciding which project to choose.
One option is Men in Black 3. Columbia hired Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen to work on the script in October, although they didn’t know whether Smith or Tommy Lee Jones would be returning. They are probably waiting to see if the script is any good before signing up to save the world from aliens again. Men in Black was released back in 1997 and made $589 million worldwide, it was then followed by Men in Black 2 which didn’t do as well with $441 million in 2002. If Will Smith came back for Men in Black 3 it should be a nice payday for everyone involved.
His other option is a family fantasy movie called The City that Sailed. The film revolves around a New York street magician who is unhappily separated from his young daughter. The girl, who moves to London, finds magic candles that make her wishes comes true, with unintended consequences: The island of Manhattan separates from the continent and floats toward England, bringing her dad ever closer. Since Will’s priority recently has been his children, the project could be an opportunity to give his daughter a starring role following her big screen debut in I Am Legend.
I don’t think there would be anything stopping him from eventually making both; it’s just a case of which one he wants to focus his attention on first. Which would you prefer, Men in Black 3 or family fantasy The City that Sailed?
